On 08 August 2016, Robert W. Smith reported the discovery of a prime gap of measure G=5103138 follwing the 216849-digit prime P1=281*499979#/46410 - 2702372. This gap is presently listed with a classification of C??, indicating that it must be verified independently by another researcher before it is granted the C?P status and recognized as a new largest known prime gap. I have personally verified that the endpoints P1 and P2=P1+G are probable primes, but checking the compositeness of all the interior points will be much more time consuming; I encourage one and all to undertake this task and report the results to me. This gap would have a merit of M=10.2203.
